The high-tech hide and seek game has come to Silver Mountain, and you’re invited to join in on the fun. Stop by Silver Mountain Sports located in the Gondola Village to rent your GPS and get everything you need to start your geocaching adventure. Silver Mountain offers a variety of caches in multiple locations with varying difficulty levels that are sure to satisfy even the most avid outdoor enthusiast.
Pricing:
GPS units are available for rent at Silver Mountain Sports for $30 for a full day and $15 for a half day. Instructional videos for the GPS are are available, as well as an intro to geocaching DVD.
Silver Mountain Caches:
The original contents of the caches placed by Silver Mountain are family oriented, but as the contents changes with every visit, there’s no guarantee of what you may find inside.
Broken Choker Bar
This scenic overlook is a small picnic area that has been constructed out of a broken choker bar that was used for logging in the area many years ago. It is easily accessible, and you can even drive to within 100 feet of the cache. If you found the Morning Star Lodge cache easily and want to take you navigation skills out into the wild, this is the cache for you. Difficulty: 2
Picnic Rock
Picnic Rock is a beautifully hidden rock outcropping that overlooks the Silver Valley. This cache is harder to find as sudden elevation changes at the location increase the area that is necessary to search, as well as provide excellent hiding places. This cache is accessible on foot, but a downhill mountain bike is highly recommended in order to make you experience more enjoyable. Difficulty: 5
Karry’s Meadow
This cache is designed to allow you to enjoy the view from atop Kellogg Peak. A great family cache, this location makes for an excellent afternoon adventure, and offers the perfect setting for a picnic. Keep an eye out for grazing wildlife! Difficulty: 3
Morning Star Village
Set up as a training cache so you can familiarize yourself with your GPS before you take off up the mountain. This cache is located within the village itself, so if you’re unfamiliar with the outdoors, give this cache a try as your first GPS treasure hunting experience. Difficulty: 1
Afternoon Hike
Located off of the nature trail, this cache is designed as an excellent afternoon adventure for the entire family. Only about a half-mile from the Mountain Haus, it makes for a wonderful, educational, outdoor experience. Don’t forget to look up at the scenery. Difficulty: 4
